A Ramadan Appeal for Ceasefire and the Feeding of the Hungry

An appeal to the warring parties — and the powers that arm them — for a ceasefire and the feeding of the hungry.

In this month when the fast teaches us hunger from the inside, we cannot look away from those for whom hunger is not a discipline but a siege. The Muslim Peace Fellowship appeals — to the warring parties, to the powers that arm them, and to every government with leverage it has not used — for a Ramadan ceasefire and the immediate, unhindered feeding of the hungry.

Our tradition has long known the truce as a sacred instrument. The sacred months existed so that even ancient enmities kept a season of safety. We ask no innovation of anyone; we ask only that an old wisdom be honored: that there are times when the guns are made to wait, and the bread is made to arrive.

To fellow Muslims keeping the fast in safety, we suggest a practice for the month: let no iftar pass without a prayer, and where possible a gift, for those breaking their fast under fire. The Prophet ﷺ called the one who sleeps full while his neighbor is hungry a stranger to his example. In Ramadan, the whole ummah is one neighborhood.
